Frequently Asked Questions
What is life insurance?
Life insurance (also known as life cover and death cover) allows you to help provide for your family in the event of your death. If the worst were to happen, your family or dependants will be paid a lump sum based on the amount of cover you chose.
Life insurance aims to give you added peace of mind that your family will receive financial assistance if anything happens to you.
Reasons why people buy life insurance
Life insurance is not for everyone, though if your children, partner or other relatives depend on your income to cover the mortgage or other living expenses, then you probably would want life insurance.
Life insurance can help provide a safety net for your family. If you were to die, life insurance could help your family in a number of ways:
Pay off or reduce a mortgage and other outstanding debts, such as loans or credit cards.
Replace lost income and help with everyday living costs, giving your family greater financial security.
Support children or other dependants, including childcare, education and other future expenses.
Provide financial support for a partner, including later in life or during retirement.
Cover funeral and other final expenses.
Leave money to your family or other loved ones, providing additional financial support or a legacy.
Everyone's circumstances are different, so the amount and type of life insurance you may need will depend on your financial commitments, the people who rely on you and the support you'd like to leave behind.
What type of insurance should I consider?
There are several types of life insurance and related cover available. The right option will depend on factors such as how long you need protection, how much cover you want and what you'd like the policy to help protect.
Level term life cover: Provides a fixed amount of cover for a set period. If you die during the policy term and a successful claim is made, the policy pays out the agreed lump sum. This can be useful if you want the amount of cover to remain the same throughout the term.
Decreasing term life cover: The amount of cover gradually reduces during the policy term. It is commonly used to help protect a repayment mortgage or other reducing debt, where the outstanding balance is also expected to fall over time. Decreasing cover is typically cheaper than an equivalent level term policy.
Increasing term life cover: The amount of cover increases over time, typically in line with inflation, helping to protect the real value of your payout as the cost of living rises. Your premiums will normally increase as your cover increases.
Critical illness cover: Although not life insurance itself, Critical illness cover can provide additional financial protection by paying a lump sum following a successful claim if you're diagnosed with, or undergo specified treatment for, a critical illness covered by the policy. The illnesses and conditions covered vary between policies and providers.
Whole life cover: Unlike term life insurance, whole of life cover has no fixed policy term and is designed to provide cover for the rest of your life, provided the policy terms are met and required premiums are maintained. It pays a lump sum following a successful claim when you die.
Joint life cover: Covers two people under one policy and is often taken out by couples. Most joint life policies pay out once following the first successful claim, after which the policy ends. Alternatively, two separate individual policies can provide each person with their own cover and the potential for two separate payouts.
Over 50s life cover: A type of whole of life insurance designed specifically for people over 50. These policies commonly offer guaranteed acceptance within specified age limits without requiring a medical examination. They typically provide a smaller fixed lump sum that loved ones can use as they choose, such as towards funeral costs, outstanding financial commitments or as money left to family.
How much life insurance do I need?
The aim is to have enough cover to help replace the financial support you would have provided if you were no longer around. A simple rule of thumb is to consider life insurance cover of around 10 times your annual income, but the amount you actually need could be higher or lower depending on your individual financial circumstances and what you want the payout to provide for.
Some important considerations include:
Your mortgage and other outstanding debts, such as loans and credit cards.
How much of your income your household might need to replace, and for how long.
Children or other dependants, including childcare, education and other future expenses.
Financial support for a partner, including everyday living costs and later-life or retirement needs.
Major future financial commitments you would like the payout to help cover.
Money you'd like to leave to your family or other loved ones.
Existing savings, investments, workplace benefits or life insurance that could already provide some financial support.
How much you can comfortably afford to pay in monthly premiums.
For example, someone with a large mortgage, young children and a household that depends heavily on their income may need considerably more cover than someone whose mortgage has been repaid and whose children are financially independent. Equally, someone approaching or in retirement may still want meaningful cover to support a partner, meet outstanding financial commitments or leave money to their family.
The amount of cover you choose will affect the cost of your policy, so it's important to consider the protection you need while ensuring your premiums remain affordable. Comparing quotes from different insurers can also help you find suitable cover at a competitive price.
What is the best age for life insurance – from your 20s to your 50s?
There's no single best age to get life insurance. Your need for cover depends more on your personal circumstances, financial commitments and the people who depend on you, than simply your age.
Taking out life insurance when you're younger can have advantages, as age is one of the factors insurers use to calculate premiums and cover will typically cost more as you get older. However, younger people may also have reasons to consider cover, particularly if they have a mortgage, partner, children or other financial commitments.
Life insurance can also remain relevant in your 50s, 60s and beyond. You might want cover to help support a partner, pay off a mortgage or other outstanding commitments, or leave money to your family.
When should I consider getting or reviewing life insurance?
There isn't one particular life stage when everyone should take out life insurance. For many people, the decision to take out or review cover is triggered by a major life event, such as buying a home, getting married, having children, changing jobs, taking on new financial commitments or approaching retirement. These changes can affect both the amount and type of protection you may need.
If a partner, children or other loved ones could be financially affected by your death, it may be worth considering life insurance. This can be particularly important if you have a mortgage or other debts, people who depend on your income, or if you'd like to leave financial support for your family.
Can I get life insurance with a medical condition, and will I need a medical?
Most life insurance applications don't require a medical examination. However, depending on factors such as your age, the amount of cover you're applying for and your medical history, an insurer may ask for further information. This could include additional questions, a report from your GP, a health screening or a medical examination.
Having a pre-existing medical condition doesn't necessarily prevent you from getting life insurance. Insurers assess applications individually, although your health may affect the premium, terms or cover available.
Can everything be done online?
In practice, the answer is really no. While you can research life insurance and start a quotation journey online, you'll need to speak with an adviser or insurer representative before your cover is finalised.
There are good reasons for this. The size of your life insurance cover can be hundreds of thousands of pounds so it's important that the information provided is complete and accurate. Speaking with an experienced adviser gives you the opportunity to check the details of your application, ask questions and ensure there is a clear and accurate record of the information used to arrange your cover. This can also help reduce the risk of misunderstandings or important information being missed.
An experienced adviser can also help you find the cheapest suitable cover for your circumstances. Life insurance premiums can vary between insurers, so comparing multiple providers can make a meaningful difference to the price you pay. A broker can compare quotes from a wide range of life insurers, while also helping you consider the level and type of cover that meets your needs.
Through Life Insurance Choices, you can request a free, no-obligation quote. Following your enquiry, you'll speak with an experienced broker who can discuss your requirements, check the relevant details and compare life insurance options from across the whole of the market, helping you find suitable cover at a competitive price.
Will my family have to pay tax on my life insurance?
Life insurance payouts are free from Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. However, depending on how your policy is set up, the payout may form part of your estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes. If the value of your estate exceeds the applicable tax-free threshold (currently £325,000 for the standard nil-rate band), some or all of the amount above the threshold may be subject to IHT.
One way to help protect the payout from a potential Inheritance Tax liability is to write your life insurance policy in trust. Depending on how the trust is set up, the proceeds can usually remain outside your estate for Inheritance Tax and probate purposes and be paid directly to your chosen beneficiaries. This can help the money reach your loved ones more quickly, as payment will not normally need to wait for probate. Your broker or insurer can also explain how putting your life insurance in trust works and help you with the relevant paperwork.
Tax and trust treatment depends on your individual circumstances and the rules can change, so you should seek professional advice if you're unsure about the best arrangement for your circumstances.
How does my family or a dependant make a life insurance claim?
If you die while your life insurance policy is in force, your family, beneficiary or another person handling your affairs will normally need to contact the insurer to start a claim.
The insurer will explain the claims process and the information or documents it needs. This will typically include details about the person who has died and may include the policy number and death certificate. If the policy has been written in trust, the trustees will usually be involved in making the claim and arranging payment to the beneficiaries.
